Equipment, and what each item does
Equipment is listed by type. A test is advised only when the examination raises a question it can answer.
Retina and glaucoma diagnostics
| Equipment | What it does |
|---|---|
| OCT and OCT angiography | Scans the retina and optic nerve in cross-section using light, and maps blood flow in the small retinal vessels without a dye injection. |
| A second OCT unit | A separate OCT scanner for retina and optic nerve scans. |
| Ultra-widefield retinal imaging | Photographs a wide area of the retina in one capture, kept as a record for comparison at later visits. |
| Automated visual field testing (perimetry) | Maps the sensitivity of central and side vision. Used mainly to detect and follow glaucoma. |
Cornea and refractive diagnostics
| Equipment | What it does |
|---|---|
| Corneal topography and tomography | Maps the shape and thickness of the cornea. Used in keratoconus, in assessment before laser vision correction and ICL, and in planning cataract surgery. |
| Auto kerato-refractometer | Gives a starting measurement of spectacle power and corneal curvature, which the optometrist then refines. |
Outpatient examination
| Equipment | What it does |
|---|---|
| Slit lamp biomicroscope | The examination microscope used to look at the eyelids, cornea, iris and lens under magnification and, with additional lenses, the retina. |
| Computerised tonometer | Measures the pressure inside the eye. |
| Computerised lensmeter | Reads the power of your existing glasses. |
Cataract surgery
| Equipment | What it does |
|---|---|
| Optical biometry | Measures the length of the eye and the curvature of the cornea. These measurements are used to calculate the power of the lens implant. |
| Image-guided cataract planning and digital marker | Records a reference image of the eye before surgery and uses it during surgery to guide the position of incisions and the alignment of toric lens implants. |
| Phacoemulsification system | The machine used in cataract surgery to break up the cloudy lens with ultrasound and remove it through a small incision. |
| Operating microscope | Gives the surgeon a magnified, lit view of the eye during surgery. |
Laser and procedures
| Equipment | What it does |
|---|---|
| YAG laser | Used for capsulotomy, for cloudiness behind a lens implant after cataract surgery, and for peripheral iridotomy in narrow angles. |
| Corneal cross-linking unit | Delivers controlled ultraviolet light in corneal cross-linking (C3R), a treatment intended to slow or stop the progression of keratoconus. |
Sterilisation
| Equipment | What it does |
|---|---|
| Steam steriliser (autoclave) | Sterilises surgical instruments with pressurised steam. |
Procedures carried out at the hospital
- Cataract surgery by phacoemulsification, with monofocal, toric, extended depth of focus and multifocal lens implants
- ICL (implantable collamer lens) surgery
- Pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft
- Intravitreal injections
- Corneal cross-linking (C3R) for keratoconus
- YAG laser capsulotomy and peripheral iridotomy
Optical store and contact lenses
The optical store is inside the hospital and has its own lens laboratory, so a prescription written in the consulting room can be made up in the same building. The contact lens clinic fits soft lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses and scleral lenses.
